The Wolf Erlbruch books are great.  There's a story about a duck who makes friends with Death, and another about a mole who wakes up with a poo on his head.  "Did you do this on my head?", he asks each animal, whilst pointing at his unfortunate hat.

Synopsis:   Two donkeys who have loved each other for many years have a silly argument. They each storm off to find someone smarter and better.
